Historical Photo Tour of Cranford NJ

One of the things I like about living in Cranford are the charming old houses (the photo above is a house on Walnut Ave from the 1880s) and the history that comes with it.  Coming across this trove of photos the other night was a great way to appreciate what a cool place this is.  For a glimpse into what Cranford used look like, check out my favorites below.

The center of town in 1924.  I’m pretty sure this picture was taken from about where Track 5 Coffee is now.  And that triangle of grass is where the clock is now.

This photo from 1890 reminds us that Cranford used to be affectionately known as “The Venice of NJ.” The Rahway River meanders through town and according to the NYTimes old NYC big wigs used to have summer homes here. Many of Cranford’s river dwelling residents still have docs and canoes.  But don’t worry if you don’t have your own canoe you can always borrow one at the Canoe Club!

This photo of Grant School, Cranford’s first public school, was taken in 1884.  The school was on the corner of Holly and Springfield.

And lastly, since we’ve already had snow three times and the first day of winter is just around the corner, I’ll leave you with this photo of families skating on the frozen river.  The building in the background is one of two “casinos” which were home to town social and recreational activities.
